The next day they set off for their shopping and lunch. To Virginia’s surprise, Valkyrie was interested in every purchase she made. She tried to protest when he took her to the perfume department and began to test one after the other on her skin. She loved the spicy perfumes, so the assistant, sensing a large sale, began to offer ever more expensive ones. Virginia would have walked out then but Valkyrie had hold of her hand. He raised his brows when she declined Chanel No. 5.

“No, I don’t really like that one,” she said perfectly truthfully. Then Dior’s “Dune” was put on her wrist and Valkyrie lifted her hand to his nose and sniffed, saying, “That’s the one.” She raised her wrist to her own nose.

“It’s a wonderful perfume. I love it,” she said. A large bottle was purchased, wrapped, and presented to her. She amazed herself by kissing Valkyrie’s cheek in the middle of the perfumery.

“Thank you so much, you are far too generous. How can I ever repay you?”

“There’s no need. I told you. You thank me so prettily, and that’s all you have to do.”

Virginia refused point-blank to allow him to pay for the items she bought in Boots the Chemist. “I want to stand on my own two feet,” she said tartly. She was glad that he didn’t insist. A bottle of expensive perfume was one thing, but she loved it and felt guilty he’d bought it. She wasn’t going to allow him to buy everything for her. It was a sort of test, she supposed. She wanted to be independent, and she wanted to see if he’d allow her freedom. She was more than pleased when he did. It seems that he does understand what I need. I couldn’t bear it if he smothered me, even with kindness. I need to have some freedom. I don’t want to give up all control to anyone yet, maybe not ever.

They had coffee in Marks and Spencer’s, where she’d gone to buy a nightdress. His raised eyebrows, as she handed it to the assistant to be wrapped, made her blush. He bought her coffee and a toasted currant teacake, and they sat in the warm café, alone in the middle of a crowd.

“I love coffee,” Virginia said. “I never thought I’d take to it. I was brought up on tea.”

“Yes, so was I, but then all these trendy coffee shops opened. There were all those different flavours to try, as well as coffee from many different parts of the world. I still enjoy a pot of tea, and no breakfast is complete without tea,” Valkyrie agreed.

“Yes, I agree. I love coffee mid-morning and after a good meal, but if I’m tired and thirsty, it has to be tea, black tea, not fruit teas,” she said.

“No indeed,” Valkyrie replied and shuddered. “I can’t stand fruit teas.”

“What else do you like to drink?” she asked.

“I like wine with a meal. I love champagne, if it’s the good stuff.
